Adding sound, movement and light

Water features turn a still pond into the centerpiece of a yard. The sound of falling water masks traffic noise, moving water adds oxygen for fish, and lighting lets you enjoy the pond long after dark.

  • Fountains are the simplest way to add movement. Pond fountains explains spray patterns, sizing and how to install a fountain pump.
  • Waterfalls and streams add the most impact and need the most planning. Pond waterfalls covers design, building the spillway and choosing a pump that can lift enough water.
  • Lighting brings out the water at night. Pond lights covers underwater and spotlight options, placement and electrical safety.

Every feature adds demand on your pump, so check your sizing against our pond pump guide and the pond calculators before you buy. Keep features running cleanly with regular checks as part of your pond maintenance, and see the Pond Equipment section for pumps, filters and other kit.

Common questions

Yes. Fountains and waterfalls add movement and oxygen, which fish and filter bacteria need, and moving water makes it harder for mosquitoes to breed. They don't replace a filter, though, and fountains that spray high can lose a lot of water to evaporation.

It depends on how wide the waterfall is and how high the water has to be lifted. A common starting point is about 100 to 150 gallons per hour for each inch of waterfall width, adjusted for the height and pipe length. Our pump guide and calculators help you size it.

Pond lights made for outdoor and underwater use are safe when installed correctly. Use low-voltage lighting, plug transformers and pumps into a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet, and have a licensed electrician add any new circuits or outlets.
