How this calculator works
Enter how many miles you drive a year, the gas car's mpg and the price of gas. For the electric car, enter its efficiency in miles per kilowatt-hour, your home electricity price, a typical public charging price, and how much of your charging happens at home.
The calculator works out the yearly fuel cost for each car, the cost per mile and how much you'd save.
Finding your numbers
- Home electricity price: on your utility bill, shown in cents per kWh. Include delivery charges for a more accurate figure.
- Public charging price: shown in charging apps; fast chargers usually cost much more than home charging.
- Home charging share: most drivers who can charge at home do 80% or more of their charging there.
Common questions
Most electric cars travel about 3 to 4 miles per kilowatt-hour. Larger SUVs and trucks are lower, and efficiency drops in cold weather and at highway speeds. Your car's display or app usually shows its average.
Home electricity usually costs much less per kilowatt-hour than public fast chargers, which also pay for equipment and high-power connections. Charging overnight on a time-of-use plan can lower home costs even more.
No, it compares fuel only. Electric cars usually need less maintenance, with no oil changes, but purchase price, insurance and depreciation also matter. A small amount of energy is also lost while charging, so real costs can be about 10% higher.
