Packing basics
Packing for your trip
Packing well saves money on bag fees, time at the airport and hassle on the road. The key is bringing fewer, more versatile items and knowing exactly what you'll need for your destination and season.
How to pack light: a carry-on packing checklist covers choosing a bag, building a mix-and-match wardrobe, toiletries, TSA rules and a full checklist.
Cold destinations need a different approach. How to pack for a winter trip explains the three-layer system, what to bring for cold cities and snow, and how to save space with bulky winter clothes.
Driving instead of flying? How to plan a road trip includes a car packing list and emergency kit. Before you pack, check what your airline's fare includes, since bag fees vary; see how to find cheap flights. For valuables, check whether your homeowners or renters insurance covers belongings while you travel.
Common questions
The TSA 3-1-1 rule allows liquids, gels and aerosols in containers of 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less, all fitting in one quart-size bag per passenger. Medicines and baby formula are allowed in larger amounts but must be declared at screening. Check the TSA website for current rules.
Pack outfits that mix and match, plan to rewear items, roll clothes or use packing cubes, wear your bulkiest shoes and jacket on the plane, and use solid toiletries. Our packing guides include full checklists.
Keep your ID and travel documents, medicines, phone and charger, valuables, a change of clothes and anything you can't do without for a day or two in your carry-on, in case your checked bag is delayed.
