Gas cost calculator

Work out how much you spend on gas each month and year, and how much a more efficient car could save you.

Miles per

Its fuel economy, to see what you'd save.

Estimates only.

How this calculator works

Enter how far you drive (per week, month or year), your car's miles per gallon and the price of gas. The calculator divides your miles by your mpg to find the gallons used, then multiplies by the gas price.

Add a second car's mpg to see how much you'd save each year by switching to it, which is useful when you're shopping for a car.

Tips

  • Use your real mpg, not the official rating, if you know it. City driving, short trips, cold weather and heavy loads all lower it.
  • Check prices near you; they can vary by a lot between stations and states.

Common questions

Fill the tank and reset your trip meter. At the next fill-up, divide the miles driven by the gallons it took to refill. Many cars also show average mpg on the dashboard.

Many US drivers cover around 12,000 to 14,000 miles a year, or about 1,000 a month. Check your own odometer over a month for a better number.

Drive smoothly, keep tires properly inflated, remove roof racks when you're not using them, combine errands, and use a gas price app or rewards program to find cheaper fuel.
